Fathom is a daily game at fathomgame.io, run by one person. You can play it without an account, a name or an email. The game tells one player from another with a random id your own browser invents, which says nothing about who you are, and it is the only identifier attached to anything you do here.
If this policy changes, the date above changes with it, and a change that matters gets a note on the site rather than a silent edit. Four questions follow, in the order people ask them.
what is kept
On this device. Your game, your streak, your scores, every game you have finished, your settings — sound, high contrast, whether the answer box clears after a wrong answer — the random player id. All of it lives in this browser's local storage. The only part of it that ever leaves is the random id, with each finished game's score, as the next paragraph says.
On the server. When you finish a game, the server keeps the game number, the score and the random id. That is the whole of what the curve of everyone's scores is drawn from: a column of anonymous ids and numbers, not a table of people. If a notice on the site asks a question and you answer it, your choice is kept with the random id, so each player is counted once.
Counts. Each page you open and each game you start adds one to a tally for that day, kept by page and by kind of device (phone, tablet or computer). The tally holds no id and no address. If the game hits an error in your browser, the error message, where in the game's code it came from, the page it happened on and the kind of device are sent so we can fix it.
No cookies. Fathom is free, nothing is bought, and nothing sets a cookie.
For rate limiting. Where a limit needs to remember an address it is stored as a salted one-way hash that cannot be turned back into an address, and only until that limit resets, which is never more than a day. The host keeps standard short-lived server logs of its own.
what is not
Your answers are checked against the answer list and discarded. Nothing you type is stored, in any game.
No account is required, and none is offered. No tracking cookies, ever. No advertising network — there are no ads on Fathom today, and if that ever changes this page will say who serves them and what they collect before the first one is shown. Nothing kept here is sold, rented or shared for anybody else's purposes.
Fathom is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly keep personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us any, write and it will be deleted.
what leaves this device
Every name you type goes to the server to be checked against the answer list — that is how scoring works, and there is no way to do it here. It is checked and dropped in the same request. When the last question closes, the game number, the score and the random id go with it.
Your game, your streak and your history live in this browser only. Beyond each finished game's score, none of it is sent anywhere, which also means clearing site data erases it and we cannot get it back.
The counts and error reports above go to our own server and nowhere else; the game runs exactly the same if your browser blocks them.
The game is served by Vercel and its database is kept by Turso, two companies we pay to run it; they hold it for us and do nothing else with it. There is no analytics service and no advertising network: nobody else gets anything.
how to erase it
Everything on this device goes when you clear the site's data in your browser. That includes your scores and your streak, which exist nowhere else.
For anything on the server — to see what is held, correct it, or have it deleted — write to support@fathomgame.io. Scores are filed under the random id rather than a name, so include the id if you want those gone too.
That address is also the whole of our support. Anything about any of the above: support@fathomgame.io.
